WESELE LUBELSKIE / THE LUBLIN WEDDING
Composed by Aleksander Kościów
Performed by Kronos Quartet and Zespół Międzynarodowej Szkoły Muzyki Tradycyjnej
During the 9th CODES Festival of Traditional and Avant-Garde Music, we will perform with the Polish International School of Traditional Music Ensemble a brand new project composed by Aleksander Kościów. He is creating a new work that intertwines contemporary music with traditional songs from the Lublin region. Bordering Ukraine and Belarus to the east, the Radom and Kielce regions to the west, the Białystok region to the north, and the Subcarpathian region to the south, Lublin has been a crossroads of many cultures since the 10th century, and the cross pollination of so many traditions has been reflected in the region’s unique art and music. Taking inspiration from Stanisław Wyspiański’s play The Wedding and the film of the same title by Andrzej Wajda, Kościów’s score will focus our musical explorations through the lens of one cherished Polish tradition that is shared across all cultures – a wedding.
Dedicated to the CODES Festival, “The Lublin Wedding” is part of the 700 Years of the City of Lublin celebrations.
