For the Future, featuring special guests Wu Man, pipa, and Sirojiddin Juarev, dutar

In an adventurous concert of new works never before heard in the Middle East, Kronos will preview their new collaboration with Tajikistan’s Sirojiddin Juarev, a master of Central Asian long-necked lutes, and the acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man. This incredible meeting of musical minds is facilitated through Kronos’s ongoing partnership with the Aga Khan Music Initiative, which brings the quartet together with master musicians from societies around the world in which Muslims have a significant presence to compose, arrange and perform new music rooted in regional traditions. In addition, Kronos will perform selections (listed below) from their acclaimed education initiative Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire, which is commissioning – and distributing for free – the first learning library of contemporary repertoire for string quartet.

Islam Chipsy (arr. Jacob Garchik) / Zaghlala زغللةً

Aleksandra Vrebalov / My Desert, My Rose

Aftab Darvishi / Daughters of Sol World premiere

    Franghiz Ali-Zadeh / Rǝqs (Dance)

    Philip Glass / Quartet Satz

    Yevgeniy Sharlat / pencil sketch

Presented in partnership with Aga Khan Music Initiative (AKMI), a program of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture
