Students in Southern California take on Kronos’ Fifty for the Future

Kronos had an amazing time working with students from Arnold O. Beckman High School, Orange County School of the Arts, Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Chapman University on several pieces from Kronos’ Fifty for the Future.

Kronos Artistic Director and violinist David Harrington writes, “The students were so prepared, so flexible in their approaches to their instruments, so responsive to everything I said and their total concentration was inspiring. It was a great pleasure for me to hear them play Franghiz Ali-Zadeh’s Reqs!! I hope that they will perform Franghiz’s music soon and have a look at some of the other Fifty for the Future pieces as well.”

Tesla Quartet Plays Garth Knox’s Satellites

The emerging Tesla Quartet was awarded a two-week residency at Aldeburgh Music, through which they had the opportunity to invite a tutor of their choice to work with them for three days. As the Quartet plans to include Garth Knox‘s Fifty for the Future piece Satellites in their future programming, they invited Knox to coach them at Aldeburgh, resulting in some very fruitful working sessions.

We’re thrilled to see these talented young musicians engaging with Kronos’ Fifty for the Future, and we can’t wait to see where they take Knox’s Satellites next season!

Rhiannon Giddens Nominated for Two Grammy Awards

The formidable Rhiannon Giddens (Fifty for the Future Composer, Year One) has been nominated for two Grammy Awards for Factory Girl: Best American Roots Performance on the title track, and Best Folk Album on the EP itself. Recorded during the T Bone Burnett–produced sessions for Rhiannon Giddens’s highly acclaimed solo debut, Tomorrow Is My Turn, Factory Girl includes songs written or made famous by musical heroes Ethel Waters and Sister Rosetta Tharp; a song co-written by Giddens; a traditional Gaelic mouth music tune; and the title track, a traditional Irish song for which Giddens wrote additional lyrics. “It’s a clutch of tunes that work together like the cards in a winning poker hand,” says the New York Times. “Her accompaniment … points to an ageless gold standard for American roots music.” “Deftly curated, gorgeously sung,” says NPR, “this EP is America.”

Congratulations, Rhiannon! Kronos is honored to have you on our roster of Fifty for the Future composers.
