Kronos returns to SF International Film Festival for collaboration with Guy Maddin

On April 16, Kronos helps close the San Francisco Film Society’s 60th Annual San Francisco International Film Festival with a live performance of composer Jacob Garchik’s score for “The Green Fog – A San Francisco Fantasia,” a new visual collage created specifically for the festival by award-winning filmmaker Guy Maddin.

“Finding the beauty inside the appalling”

“Originally assembled to perform George Crumb’s caustic antiwar opus “Black Angels” in 1973, Kronos Quartet has spent some four decades on the cutting edge of new music, forging a vast international network of collaborators. But the San Francisco string quartet’s global vision has rarely seemed as timely and urgent as the Kronos Festival 2017: Here and Now.”

“An uplifting antidote:” Reviews from this weekend’s SoCal concerts

“Kronos Quartet’s concert Friday evening at Sherwood Auditorium was an uplifting antidote to Donald Trump’s inaugural address. Trump proposed, ‘America first.’ Kronos countered with ‘One Earth, One People, One Love.’ Everything on the program was commissioned by Kronos, and their choice of composers celebrated inclusivity… It was a typical Kronos Quartet program, yet it assumed special significance.” –  The San Diego Union-Tribune

“In the last quarter of the 20th century, [Kronos Quartet] revolutionized everything in string quartet country and beyond… The quartet remains as geographically, politically and spiritually feisty as ever. Forget about genre; Kronos made that an irrelevant term ages ago. The place to begin is probably politics. The string quartet serves better than just about anything I can think of as a salvation from all that is going on right now from which you may desperately crave respite… Kronos was founded in the early 1970s specifically to play George Crumb’s ‘Black Angels,’ a string quartet in protest of the Vietnam War. Kronos has never stopped taking a stand.” – Los Angeles Times
