World Premiere - Derek Charke’s “Dear Creator, help us return to the centre of our hearts”

Kronos Quartet returns to Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall on Saturday, March 7 at 9 pm, bringing the world premiere of Derek Charke’s Dear Creator, help us return to the centre of our hearts, which was inspired by a visit Charke made to the Athabasca Oil Sands in northern Alberta, where an economic boom is underway. Writes Charke: “Dear Creator is a reflection of my experience from this trip. A soundtrack accompanies the quartet, but not constantly. At first is it subtle. Sounds of trucks and heavy equipment, sounds of steam from the processing plants, sounds of wildlife, birds and nature from the beautiful landscapes that surround the mines, sounds of traffic on highway 63, and the sounds of people; workers at the Finning repair shop, dump truck drivers, an airplane pilot, a community gathering in Fort McKay, and young kids swearing in Fort Chipewyan are interspersed throughout the 30 minutes of a fully notated string quartet score.

Orrin Keepnews

All of us at Kronos - the Quartet, staff and Board of Directors - are deeply saddened by the death of our friend and colleague Orrin Keepnews. Orrin produced several Kronos recordings, served on the Kronos Board for more than 15 years, and was a great mentor and friend. We value our long association and feel lucky for the chance encounter decades ago when Orrin and David shared a ride from a California Arts Council meeting in Sacramento and hit it off. We are grateful for Orrin’s wisdom, leadership, support and guidance over the years, and we send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Orrin was a truly unique voice in music, and he will always have a very special place in our hearts.

Guest artist Tanya Tagaq, the charismatic Polaris Prize-winning Inuit throat singer, appears on the 30-minute title track, which David Harrington, Artistic Director of Kronos, describes as “really one of the major, spectacular pieces that has ever been written for Kronos.” The disc also includes Cercle du Nord III which, like Tundra Songs, incorporates environmental sounds from northern Canada; and four of Charke’s series of Inuit Throat Song Games. All of these pieces were commissioned and premiered by the Kronos Quartet to critical acclaim in North America and Europe.
