Polar Music Prize 2011 Speech

Kronos Quartet received the Polar Music Prize in a ceremony at the Stockholm Concert Hall last week. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden handed out the awards to Kronos and their fellow laureate, Patti Smith. Polar Music Prize 2011 Ceremony

On August 30, Kronos Quartet received the Polar Music Prize, an international music prize which is awarded to individuals, groups or institutions in recognition of exceptional achievements. The 2011 Polar Prize ceremony took place at the Stockholm Concert Hall, where King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden presented the awards to Kronos and Patti Smith, this year’s co-laureate. Previous laureates include Bjork, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, and Ravi Shankar, as well as Kronos collaborators Steve Reich, Gyorgy Ligeti, and Sofia Gubaidulina.

Nonesuch to release Steve Reich’s “WTC 9/11” - Pre-order now for a signed album!

We’re thrilled to announce that Nonesuch Records will release Steve Reich’s WTC 9/11 on September 6th, 2011. The album marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, which is the subject of Reich’s piece. Commissioned for and recorded by Kronos, WTC 9/11 is scored for three string quartets and pre-recorded voices. The album also includes Reich’s Mallet Quartet, performed by Sō Percussion, and Dance Patterns, featuring members of Steve Reich and Musicians, as well as a DVD with a live performance of Mallet Quartet by Sō Percussion. Kronos Quartet receives 2011 Avery Fisher Prize and 2011 Polar Music Prize

It was announced today that Kronos has received two internationally prestigious awards: the Avery Fisher Prize (USA), awarded for outstanding achievement and excellence in classical music, and the Polar Music Prize (Sweden), an international music prize which is awarded to individuals, groups or institutions in recognition of exceptional achievements. No other musician or ensemble has ever won both prizes, let alone in a single year.
