Kronos’ Fifty for the Future featured on

Kronos violinist John Sherba recently spoke with about Kronos’ Fifty for the Future, our education and legacy project that is commissioning – and distributing for free – the first learning library of contemporary repertoire for string quartet:

“There are going to be a lot of new techniques and ways to describe music. I remember when we were working on an album we did called ‘Pieces of Africa’ with composers from all over Africa. During rehearsals, we’d be talking about how an elephant walks – who would ever think that would come up in a quartet rehearsal? Another composer would use the word ‘gluing’ to describe the rhythmic aspect and how to stay together. We expanded our whole vocabulary of how to describe and talk about music. That’s also the goal for anybody who would try to tackle all 50 compositions in ‘Fifty for the Future,’ to expand the vocabulary.”

Kronos plays live to the solar eclipse on Monday (and there’s an app for that)

Kronos’ performance of Wayne Grim’s “233rd Day, before and after Totality” (a computer sonification of Monday’s total solar eclipse with live string quartet music) is SOLD OUT. However, to hear the concert, you do not have to be in the theater, at the Exploratorium, in San Francisco, or even in the United States! You just need a computer or phone. We’ll be one of the many live streams available on the Exploratorium’s website and free Total Solar Eclipse App for iOS and Android. The app, which includes information about the eclipse and safe viewing techniques, also allows users to view the eclipse live from their phones and tablets, and share to televisions in HD video.

On August 21, the sonification live stream begins at 9:15 a.m. PDT/12:15 p.m. EDT and Kronos begins playing at 10:30 a.m. PDT/1:30 p.m. EDT.

To learn more about our concert, check out NPR Classical’s article on Deceptive Cadence.
