Ladilikan: New Collaborative Album with Trio Da Kali

Yesterday, we announced our new collaborative album with Trio Da Kali called Ladilikan, due out September 15 on World Circuit Records. Trio Da Kali’s artistic director and balafon player is none other than Fodé Lassana Diabaté, one of Kronos’ Fifty for the Future Year 1 composers! Listen to and learn about the piece that he composed on balafon for string quartet here, and if you haven’t heard our first single with Trio Da Kali yet, check out “Eh Ya Ye” on Spotify or YouTube.

Trio Da Kali is a Malian griot ‘super-group’ formed, as part of our third collaboration with the Aga Khan Music Initiative, in 2014 by musicologist Dr. Lucy Durán. We are grateful for our partnership with AKMI (also a Kronos’ Fifty for the Future Legacy Partner), which brings us together with leading musicians from around the world to compose, arrange, and perform new music rooted in regional traditions.

Comprised of incredibly gifted musicians from celebrated hereditary musical families in Mali, Trio Da Kali features balafon player Fodé Lassana Diabaté, a long-time member of Toumani Diabate’s Symmetric Orchestra, bass ngoni player Mamadou Kouyaté, the eldest son of the instrument’s greatest exponent Bassekou Kouyaté, and singer Hawa ‘Kassé Mady’ Diabaté, daughter of Mali’s greatest traditional singer Kassé Mady Diabaté.
