Kronos returns to SF International Film Festival for collaboration with Guy Maddin

On April 16, Kronos helps close the San Francisco Film Society’s 60th Annual San Francisco International Film Festival with a live performance of composer Jacob Garchik’s score for “The Green Fog – A San Francisco Fantasia,” a new visual collage created specifically for the festival by award-winning filmmaker Guy Maddin.

Maddin (The Forbidden Room, Brand upon the Brain!) has taken on the challenge to remake Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo through his distinctive assemblage technique, plumbing a wealth of Bay Area-based footage from studio classics, ‘50s noir, documentary, experimental films, and ‘70s prime-time TV.

Over the last decade, Garchik has arranged approximately 70 pieces for Kronos, and also composed the score to the documentary film The Campaign (2013) about the fight for marriage equality in California. His Green Fog score adds an additional performance challenge by including a live Foley element (the “Old Hollywood” method of creating special sound effects).

Kronos performed Bill Morrison and Aleksandra Vrebalov’s Beyond Zero: 1914–1918 at the SF International Film Festival two years ago.
