Hewlett awards Kronos grant to support new work with Terence Blanchard and Nikky Finney

Kronos Performing Arts Association is honored to announce that we’re commissioning composer Terence Blanchard and poet Nikky Finney to create an evening-length work for string quartet, chorus and spoken word, entitled At War with Ourselves. Made possible by a Hewlett 50 Arts Commission from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the project is a collaboration that will also Valérie Sainte-Agathe, who will assemble and direct the choir. The project will include workshops and artist residencies with San Francisco-based organizations Youth Speaks, 826 Valencia and Sunset Youth Services.

We are grateful to the Hewlett Foundation for their generosity. Learn more our Hewlett 50 Arts Commission >

The idea for At War With Ourselves began back in 2012 when Kronos, Finney, and Blanchard were brought together for the first time at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland. A number of community workshops were held at the time, and Finney’s The Battle of and for the Black Face Boy was written during that time. This poem will serve as the starting point for At War With Ourselves. The piece, which was conceived to mark the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War history, has evolved into a work exploring race relations in present-day America.

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is a nonpartisan, private charitable foundation that has been making grants to support the performing arts in communities across the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 50 years. Its new Hewlett 50 Arts Commissions is a five-year, $8 million initiative celebrating the foundation’s 50th anniversary and supporting the creation and premiere of new works by world-class performing artists in Bay Area communities.
