UPDATED – Ladilikan is fRoots, Songlines and Transglobal World Music Chart’s “Album of the Year”

It’s that time of the year again, the season for music critics’ year-end best-of lists. We’re humbled and thrilled that, as of today, Ladilikan – our joint album with Trio Da Kali that was released this fall by World Circuit Records – has been highlighted by:

Songlines, as one of the magazine’s ten “Best Albums of 2017”
fRoots, as the magazine’s “Critics Poll Album of the Year 2017”
– Transglobal World Music Chart, as the music critic network’s “Best Album of 2017”

The album has also been included on year-end lists by NPR Music (#42 of 50), The Guardian (#50 of 50) and Uncut (#43 of 75); and world music year-end lists by MixedWorldMusic (#2 of 10), Giornale Della Musica (#2 of 20) and Mojo (#9 of 10); as well as holiday gift guides by Afropop Worldwide and The Mercury News.

Comprised of incredibly gifted griot musicians from the Mande culture of Mali, Trio Da Kali was formed in 2014 by musicologist Dr. Lucy Durán with support from the Aga Khan Music Initiative (AKMI), a program of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Our collaboration with Trio Da Kali came about through our ongoing partnership with AKMI, which has on three separate occasions brought us together with leading musicians from around the world to compose, arrange, and perform new music rooted in regional traditions.

Trio Da Kali’s members all hail from celebrated hereditary musical families. Balafon player Fodé Lassana Diabaté is a long-time member of Toumani Diabate’s Symmetric Orchestra; bass ngoni player Mamadou Kouyaté is the the eldest son of the instrument’s greatest exponent Bassekou Kouyaté; and singer Hawa ‘Kassé Mady’ Diabate is the daughter of Mali’s greatest traditional singer Kassé Mady Diabate.

Giving a new voice to a timeless repertoire that is now endangered in contemporary Malian music, Ladilikan features arrangements by Diabaté, Durán and long-time Kronos collaborator Jacob Garchik that were commissioned by AKMI.
