“Superb and exceptionally intelligent” Landfall out today!

Nonesuch Records released Laurie Anderson and Kronos Quartet’s Landfall today. Check out the first reviews below and click here to stream it now or purchase a digital download, CD, or 2xLP.

“An uninterrupted stroke of imagination” – SPIN

“Finds beauty in even the darkest of disasters, a discovery that can be applied to everyday struggles” – Newsday (★★★☆)

“Loss is one of the core elements of the human psyche. It shapes us and it resonates in us. Music which powerfully evokes it chimes with us like no other.” – The Quietus

“Superb and exceptionally intelligent; nothing short of excellent… clearly in the running for HorizonVU Music’s best pick for 2018” – Horizon VU Music

“What impresses is the variety of rhythmic figures throughout the album, with some exquisitely subtle modulations. Anderson grounds the piece in the world of human emotional experience rather than material loss” – The Line Of Best Fit (8.5/10)

“Extraordinary; some of the most brilliant [music] I’ve heard in a long time:” – Blogcritics

“There is much joy to be had from an aural memorial of disaster that finds beauty and magic in a catastrophe” – Elephant Magazine  (★★★★☆)

“Immersive and cinematic: a satisfyingly cathartic listen.” – God Is In the TV (8/10)

“A hard-hitting, ambitious album: It sees [Kronos] return to their progressive, forward-thinking best combining the purity and integrity of their strings with various electronic elements and new technology… and sees the quartet operating at the height of their powers.” – musicOMH (★★★★☆)

First listen: Landfall and Final Answer

As you may know, Landfall Kronos’ collaborative album with Laurie Anderson, and Final Answer, the San Francisco Girls Chorus’ new album that features Kronos performing on three tracks, will both be released this Friday.

To hear Landfall in its entirety before it is released, please visit NPR Music for a “First Listen.”

To listen to excerpts of both Landfall and Final Answer, check out the two most recent episodes of WNYC’s New Sounds. #4079: Musical Meditations on Loss previews nine selections from Landfall, in addition to music by Valgeir Sigurðsson and others; and #4078: Works for Female Voices debuts “Music of Spheres,” our first studio recording of a work by San Francisco-based composer Sahba Aminikia, whom we’ve worked with for a number of years now and who was the artist-in-residence at KRONOS FESTIVAL 2017, our third annual hometown music festival (this year’s festival will be April 26-28 and was just announced last week!). Kronos Performing Arts Association commissioned “Music of Spheres” for and Kronos Quartet premiered it with the San Francisco Girls Chorus last year at the festival. The work also features the recorded voices of two dozen Afghan students from ANIM (Afghanistan National Institute of Music).

We will perform with the Malian griot ensemble Trio Da Kali for the first time since the release of our critically acclaimed joint album Ladilikan, unveil a new project with the adventurous American singer-songwriter Jolie Holland, and debut new work with returning festival favorites Zakir Hussain, Mahsa Vahdat, Vân-Ánh Võ and the San Francisco Girls Chorus. This year’s festival highlights the expansive sonic worlds of the British-born, Bay Area–based multidisciplinary artist David Coulter, who serves as the festival’s artist-in-residence.
