Announcing KRONOS FESTIVAL 2018 line-up

We are very excited to break the news to you about KRONOS FESTIVAL 2018, which takes place April 26 – 28, 2018, at the SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco. Our fourth annual hometown music festival features six concerts over three days and illustrates one of our central artistic tenets: collaboration. We will perform with the Malian griot ensemble Trio Da Kali for the first time since the release of our critically acclaimed joint album Ladilikan, unveil a new project with the adventurous American singer-songwriter Jolie Holland, and debut new work with returning festival favorites Zakir Hussain, Mahsa Vahdat, Vân-Ánh Võ and the San Francisco Girls Chorus. This year’s festival highlights the expansive sonic worlds of the British-born, Bay Area–based multidisciplinary artist David Coulter, who serves as the festival’s artist-in-residence. A Thousand Thoughts: “You don’t have to be bound by a category or by what’s been done before.”

Yesterday, Kronos and filmmakers Sam Green and Joe Bini debuted A Thousand Thoughts – A Live Documentary by Sam Green and Kronos Quartet at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City Utah. The premiere continues this Thursday at The Ohio State University’s Wexner Center for the Arts.

Bruce Kasanoff reviewed A Thousand Thoughts for Forbes, writing, “Green promised that the documentary would ‘use the story of the Kronos Quartet to create a larger work about the mysterious ways in which music moves us, about time passing, loss and beauty, and about utopia.’ That’s a tall order, but the live documentary delivers. It’s a pensive, rewarding, and touching experience. You feel humbled and awed to watch these performers in action as the history of their lives – and of musicians who preceded them – flashes behind them… What I value most about this event is the degree to which all involved have built a career out of busting traditional boundaries and preconceptions. A Thousand Thoughts is a powerful motivation tool for anyone who bristles at the idea of fitting into neat little boxes. You don’t have to be bound by a category or by what’s been done before. Yes, you may have to hustle or even raise funds on Kickstarter, but based on the audience’s reaction tonight, the extra effort will be more than worth it.” Read the full review >
