JUST ANNOUNCED! Kronos’ “My Lai” at BAM’s Next Wave Festival

The 2017 Next Wave Festival at BAM was announced this week, and featured among the 31 programs is My Lai, with four performances on September 27 - 30.

Composed by Jonathan Berger with a libretto by Harriet Scott Chessman, the staged, evening-length monodrama for tenor, string quartet, and Vietnamese instruments features Kronos playing with Rinde Eckert and frequent collaborator Vân-Ánh Võ. My Lai focuses on the final days of Army Warrant Officer Hugh C. Thompson Jr., probing the emotional toll of the infamous 1968 civilian massacre by US troops in Vietnam that he unsuccessfully tried to stop and the ensuing military cover up that he successfully helped to prevent.

Having premiered a concert version in 2015 at Stanford University, where Berger is a professor, and the staged version in 2016 at Chicago’s Harris Theater for Music and Dance, this is the second performance of My Lai this season, which also includes presentations at the Singapore International Festival of Arts, Cal Performances at the University of California, Berkeley, The Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA, and Hancher at the University of Iowa.
