Celebrating the moon landing 50th with a Sun Rings music video

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, Kronos has a new music video to share with you! Featuring “Beebopterismo,” the initial track off Kronos’ upcoming Nonesuch Records release Sun Rings, the video was edited by Robert Edridge-Waks and combines video footage from Willie Williams’ visual design for Kronos’ live multimedia production of the work.

Commissioned in part by the NASA Art Program and National Endowment for the Arts, Sun Rings was composed by Terry Riley for string quartet, chorus and pre-recorded spacescapes. To develop the piece, Riley and Kronos worked closely with professor Don Gurnett and the radio and plasma wave research group at the University of Iowa’s Department of Physics & Astronomy. Premiering Sun Rings in October 2002 at Hancher Auditorium, Kronos went on to perform the complete work nearly 50 times in 11 countries and 18 states, as well as play the final movement of the piece – “One Earth, One People, One Love” – countless times, even releasing it in 2015 on Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector: Music of Terry Riley to celebrate Riley’s 80th birthday. The next announced Sun Rings performance will be on March 13, 2020, in Washington, D.C., presented by Washington Performing Arts. Learn more about Sun Rings >
