From the UA Presents website: “The weekend of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we invite you to a performance by Kronos Quartet that will include Peace Be Till, a new work composed by young Oakland-based musician Zachary James Watkins. This piece is based on the pivotal moment in 1963 in Washington, D.C. when Mahalia Jackson exhorted Martin Luther King to “Tell ’em about the dream.” A request which sparked one of the most powerfully moving pieces of rhetoric ever recorded: Martin Luther King, Jr. set aside his script and improvised the now iconic portion of the “I Have a Dream” speech that became synonymous with the civil rights movement. For more than 40 years, Kronos Quartet – David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola) and Sunny Yang (cello) – has combined a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually reimagine the string quartet experience. In the process, they have become one of the most influential groups of our time. Join us for commemoration and celebration and experience the phenomena that is Kronos Quartet! This event is part of the 2020 Tucson Cello Congress.”
