KPAA Receives NEA Art Works Grant for Kronos’ Fifty for the Future

Kronos Performing Arts Association is honored to receive a $40,000 Art Works award from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of year one of Kronos’ education program, Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire.

Drawing on more than 40 years of collaboration with prominent and emerging composers from around the world, Kronos/KPAA will commission 50 new works—by 25 women and 25 men over five years—designed to guide young professional string quartets in developing the skills required of 21st-century repertoire.

This expansive project will commission 10 new works by 10 different composers each year, and Kronos is thrilled to have such an eclectic group of composers for year one of Fifty for the Future:

      Franghiz Ali-Zadeh (Azerbaijan / Germany)
      Ken Benshoof (USA)
      Fodé Lassana Diabaté (Mali)
      Rhiannon Giddens (USA)
Yotam Haber (Netherlands / Israel / USA)
      Garth Knox (Ireland / France)
      Tanya Tagaq (Canada)
      Merlijn Twaalfhoven (Netherlands)
      Aleksandra Vrebalov (Serbia / USA)
      Wu Man (China / USA)

About the award, NEA Chairman Jane Chu writes, “The arts are part of our everyday lives—no matter who you are or where you live—they have the power to transform individuals, spark economic vibrancy in communities, and transcend the boundaries across diverse sectors of society. Supporting projects like the one from Kronos offers more opportunities to engage in the arts every day.”

Kronos, and the board and staff of the Kronos Performing Arts Association are very grateful for this support!
