Toronto Symphony Orchestra Reimagines the Concert Experience

Here at Kronos, we’re always excited by creative and innovative ways to reimagine the concert experience. That’s why we’re thrilled to hear about Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s (a Commissioning Party for Kronos’ Fifty for the Future) new listening guides that use visual symbols and notations to aid the experience of live performances.

As the Creative Review puts it, the guides are made up of “a deft mix of text and graphics” that may be used “while listening to the performance, their layout visualising the thematic progression of the music, indicating the keys in use, what instruments feature and, using morse code-like notation, their duration.”

The Orchestra has been testing out these guides for almost a year now, and audience reception has been extremely positive. Many patrons follow the guides at the concert in real-time, while some take the program books to follow along while listening at home. Even teachers are beginning to incorporate this method as a classroom resource. We’re proud to be partnering with an organization so dedicated to welcoming and engaging all kinds of listeners!
