Kronos at UCLA: March 14 + 15

Kronos heads to Los Angeles this weekend for two performances at Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA! The Friday, March 14th program - a 40th anniversary celebration - features special guests Wu Man and Nels Cline, as well as works by George Crumb, Philip Glass, Krzysztof Penderecki, and more. On Saturday, March 15th, the quartet will be joined by Laurie Anderson for the Los Angeles premiere of her work Landfall.

Guitarist Nels Cline - member of Wilco, Nels Cline Trio, and much more Nels Cline- joins Kronos on March 14th for the world premiere of his piece Views from Here to the Heavens (for Scott Fraser). The piece was commissioned in honor of Kronos’ long-time sound designer Scott Fraser, who has worked with Kronos since 1992 and, like Nels, is also a guitarist.

On March 15th, Kronos and Laurie Anderson present the Los Angeles premiere of Landfall. Always a boundary-pushing storyteller with a passion for technological innovation in her artistic practice, Anderson’s creation and performance of Landfall is enhanced by a new text software that allows the instruments to initiate projected written text.

“These are stories with tempos,” Anderson says of the work. “Threaded through the stories in Landfall is an account of Hurricane Sandy that blew through New York just as I was finishing the work. I’ve always been fascinated by the complex relationship of words and music whether in song lyrics, supertitles or voice over.”

On March 13th, Kronos will present Around the World With Kronos, a special free performance in Royce Hall for 1,000 middle-school aged children from across Los Angeles as part of the Center’s K-12 education program, Design for Sharing.
