Nonesuch Records at BAM

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Nonesuch Records, Brooklyn Academy of Music presents Nonesuch Records at BAM: Celebrating a Label without Labels, a wide-ranging series of concerts, from September 9–28. Part of the 2014 Next Wave Festival, performers include Kronos Quartet, The Philip Glass Ensemble, Steve Reich and Musicians, Toumani Diabaté, Alarm Will Sound, Chris Thile, Dawn Upshaw, Caetano Veloso, and many more.

Delving into the American and international folk songbook, Kronos teams up with four celebrated roots artists within the Nonesuch family—Natalie Merchant, Rhiannon Giddens, Sam Amidon, and Olivia Chaney—to create entirely new arrangements of classic folk songs (Sept 20). The collaboration received its world premiere at the Barbican Centre in London last month.

Kronos and Laurie Anderson unite in Landfall (Sept 23-27), a work inspired by Anderson’s experience of Hurricane Sandy. Always a boundary-pushing storyteller with a passion for technological innovation in her artistic practice, Anderson enhances her creation and performance of Landfall with software that allows the instruments to initiate projected written text. “These are stories with tempos,” Anderson says of the work. “Threaded through the stories in Landfall is an account of Hurricane Sandy that blew through New York just as I was finishing the work. I’ve always been fascinated by the complex relationship of words and music whether in song lyrics, supertitles or voice over.”
