Swedish TV takeover

A film of Kronos’ May 5th concert at Uppsala Konsert & Kongress will air on SVT 2 on Saturday, September 23, at 7:40PM. The program will feature recent works by Garth Knox, Aleksandra Vrebalov, Trio Da Kali’s Fodé Lassana Diabaté, Tanya Tagaq, and Nicole Lizée, as well as the world premiere of “The Riddle” by Sweden’s own Karin Rehnqvist. These pieces were composed for Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire, Kronos’ education and legacy project that is commissioning – and distributing for free – the first learning library of contemporary repertoire for string quartet. Kronos Quartet and Kronos Performing Arts Association are grateful to UKK for supporting this project as a Commissioning Partner.

The concert program will also include Terry Riley’s “One Earth, One People, One Love” from Sun Rings, and George S. Crumb’s Black Angels.

My Lai featured on WNYC public radio

Today, tenor Rinde Eckert and composer Jonathan Berger appeared on WNYC’s The Leonard Lopate Show to discuss My Lai: A monodrama for tenor, string quartet and Vietnamese instruments, which will be performed next week as part of BAM’s 2017 Next Wave Festival. Praised by the San Francisco Chronicle as “hauntingly beautiful” and “richly evocative” and by the Chicago Tribune as “absorbing” and “eloquent,” the chamber opera, composed by Berger with a libretto by novelist Harriet Scott Chessman, makes its New York debut September 27-30 at the BAM Harvey Theatre in Brooklyn (tickets are still available). Through an intimate character study of My Lai massacre whistleblower Hugh Thompson, Kronos, Eckert, and Vietnamese multi-instrumentalist Vân-Ánh Võ expose the tragedy and trauma of war. Kronos will ring every possible bell.

“Things were turned upside down. There were terrifying things in the air… they found their way into ‘Black Angels.’” - George Crumb

Kronos was founded in 1973 after David Harrington heard “Black Angels” on the radio late one night and discovered there was music in the world that could express what he and so many others were feeling at the time.

Kronos will continue to play “Black Angels” and Terry Riley’s “One Earth, One People, One Love” along with countless other pieces that both challenge and energize, and will keep searching for the music that feels right today, next week, next month, for the next four years and beyond.

In the words of Leonard Cohen: “Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”

Kronos will ring every possible bell.
