KRONOS PRESENTS: Terry Riley FestivalHappy 80th Birthday Terry!
With Zakir Hussain, Wu Man, and other surprise guests.
Night one, Happy 80th Birthday Terry!, includes Riley’s first commission for Kronos, Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector, plus a movement from Sun Rings, which was commissioned by NASA in 2002 and features the recorded voice of Alice Walker. Pipa virtuoso Wu Man joins the quartet to perform the first movement from Riley’s The Cusp of Magic, and Kronos premieres three works and arrangements composed in honor of the birthday festivities: Yoko Ono’s To Match the Sky, an arrangement of Pete Townshend’s Baba O’Riley, and Polish composer Aleksander Kościów’s Oberek for Terry Riley. Zakir Hussain provides a musical offering as well – Taal In T – a solo tabla performance in Riley’s honor.
