Kronos Quartet’s virtuosity and sense of adventure is on full display in a performance of a new work by Aleksandra Verbalov (co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall) alongside one of its signature pieces: George Crumb’s Black Angels. Crumb’s powerful parable, written in response to the Vietnam War, is scored for amplified string quartet with string players performing on percussion while whispering, whistling, and shouting. References to Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” Quartet and the Latin “Dies irae” chant for the dead appear in this dramatic work that traces the soul’s fall from grace to redemption.
