KRONOS Five Decades Tour

from the Sydney Opera House website:

Classical music hasn’t sounded quite the same since avant-garde icon Kronos Quartet emerged onto the scene 50 years ago, its radically adventurous sound reshaping contemporary chamber music and breaking down barriers between genres. To celebrate five decades of sound that changed the world, the Grammy Award-winning group will perform a carefully-curated selection of its trailblazing work, spanning brand new works and classic arrangements from composers around the world.

Founded in 1973, Kronos Quartet established itself as a groundbreaking force in music, committed to fearlessly exploring ways to reimagine the string quartet experience. In the ensuing five decades of extraordinary musical breadth and creativity, Kronos has become one of the most celebrated and influential groups of the modern era. They have commissioned more than 1,000  works, released 70 recordings and won more than 40 major awards, including three Grammys, the Polar Music and Avery Fisher Prizes, and expanded the scope and inclusiveness of classical performance with their mentorship program. Along the way, the legendary ensemble has collaborated and performed with everyone from minimalist legends Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Philip Glass to Laurie Anderson, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Patti Smith and even Big Bird.

The 50th anniversary show will mark the debut of Kronos Quartet’s recently appointed cellist Paul Wiancko, performing alongside founder and violinist David Harrington, and longtime members John Sherba (violin) and Hank Dutt (viola). Don’t miss these masters of avant-classical in the performance of a lifetime.
