String Quartet No. 4

Peteris Vasks

2003

“It is a work that perfectly encapsulates the 20th century… It speaks with a universal language that transcends time and style, and reveals its emotional content and spiritual message very clearly… A wonderful example of a modern piece of music that does not try to be different to impress, but does impress by being familiar. And of course, specialists in this type of repertoire, the Kronos Quartet, play this music with the right blend of intellect and heart, and emphasize the message behind the notes, which gives the music its life and internal light.”

About the album

2004 Grammy Nominee – Best Chamber Music Performance

Released to celebrate Kronos Quartet’s 30th anniversary, the recording features a piece created for and premiered by Kronos—Latvian composer Peteris Vasks’ Fourth String Quartet, which reflects on the passing of the last century. The composer said of the work, “While working on the score, I often reflected upon the passing century. My reflections were somber ones. There has been so much bloodshed and destruction, and yet love’s power and idealism have helped to keep the world in balance. I wanted to speak of these things in my new quartet, not from the sidelines but with direct emotion and sensitivity.”
