In 2015, Kronos launched 50 for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire, an education and legacy project that is commissioning—and distributing online for free—50 new works for string quartet designed expressly for the training of students and emerging professionals and composed by 25 women and 25 men from around the world. Click here to access scores and parts, recordings, and other materials.

In addition, Kronos has released the scores and performance parts for the following works through the publisher Boosey and Hawkes:

Terry Riley – Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector
Hamza El Din – Escalay (Water Wheel)
Aleksandra Vrebalov – Pannonia Boundless

Kronos Collection: Volume 2 – Arrangements by Osvaldo Golijov
Carlos Paredes – Canção Verdes Anos
Rezső Seress – Gloomy Sunday
Aníbal Troilo – Responso
Agustín Lara – Se Me Hizo Fácil

For additional works, please contact the publisher of the piece you’re interested in for scores and parts. Kronos does not send out copies of music held in its library.

If you have a recording, check the liner notes or metadata, as the publisher may be listed. You can try searching the ASCAP and BMI databases for contact information.

It is likely Sigur Rós’ “Flugufrelsarinn” and is available on Kronos Quartet Plays Sigur Rós.

No full recording of Awakening has been made available, but many of the pieces on the program appear on different albums. “Oh Mother, the Handsome Man Tortures Me,” “Lullaby,” and “Alap from Raga Mishra Bhairavi” appear on Floodplain. Aulis Sallinen’s Winter Was Hard  on the album Winter Was Hard, John Oswald’s Spectre on Short Stories, Michael Gordon’s The Sad Park on Clouded Yellow, Terry Riley’s “One Earth, One People, One Love” on Sun Rings, the traditional Swedish song “Tusen Tankar” on A Thousand Thoughts, and Vladimir Martynov’s The Beatitudes on Music of Vladimir Martynov. These and other related works have been collected in a Spotify playlist. Please join Kronos’ email list for information about upcoming recordings.

In 1984, Frank Zappa wrote a piece titled None of the Above for Kronos Quartet. The quartet performs the first movement of None of the Above in the 2020 documentary Zappa, directed by Alex Winter. Kronos’ artistic director, founder, and violinist David Harrington is also interviewed in the film. None of the Above has not been recorded for commercial release, and there are no plans to record any of Frank Zappa’s works at this time.

In 1991, Mr. Bungle wrote a piece for Kronos Quartet called “Success In Life,” but it has not been recorded. Mike Patton’s band Faith No More included a sample from Kronos Quartet’s recording of Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 in the song “Malpractice” that was included on its 1992 album Angel Dust.

More recently, Trey Spruance, who is a member of Mr. Bungle, as well as briefly Faith No More (1993–94), wrote Seraphita for 50 for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire in 2016. The score and parts, a recording, an instructional video, program notes, and a filmed interview with the composer are all available for free here.
